Carbon Capture and Storage

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) involves the capture of CO2 from hydrocarbon combustion and other industrial processes, the transport of this CO2 via ship or pipeline and its permanent storage deep underground in geological formations.

Though currently expensive and complex, most regard CCS as an important part of global emissions reduction.

CCS is the foundation of both (1) the production of blue hydrogen and (2) "negative emissions" when the CO2 resulting from biomass combustion, biomass fermentation, or pulled directly from the atmosphere can be permanently stored deep underground.

Carbon Capture and Storage is an essential part of decarbonising global energy systems, especially in the more difficult to decarbonise sectors of the economy.
